Crisis Averted - Furneaux

By: Bill Osborne

There was good news for Mariners supporters today with new club chairman, Peter Furneaux revealing that major shareholder, Dudley Ramsden, had loaned funds to the club to avert a financial crisis. Dudley also helped the club by making funds available when this board took office 18 months ago.

Mr Furneaux said today, "There is no financial crisis. It has all been covered, there is a gap between now and when the TV money comes in September and that has to be bridged. It is the close season and the club has no income other than season ticket sales. But we still have to meet our commitments,"

"But both the club's bankers and other major creditors are feeling more settled", he said.

"Mr Ramsden has put his money into the company to ensure that we go forward. The situation may have been covered by Bryan Huxford if he had still been on the board, I don't know," he added.

Since taking office after the board meeting that saw Bryan Huxford, Doug Everitt and Richard Lake resign from the board, Mr Furneaux finds himself back to where he was seven years ago.

"Obviously it has taken me a couple of days to talk to everybody and pick up the reins again" He said. "I have found that everybody is upbeat thus far. They are giving me their backing and I am sure the fans can look forward to a good season."

"We have not blocked anything." he said, referring to the meeting with manager Lennie Lawrence. "The Stuart Campbell situation is progressing and Paul Groves has signed a new contract. We will be looking at bringing in players to take us forward,"

Mr Furneaux made it clear that he was not taking up the position as chairman temporary fix.

"I will be here for as long as I am required. I am just as enthusiastic as before."
