Lennie Lawrence Takes Leicester Winger On Trial!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 16/07/2001

LENNIE LAWRENCE has wasted no time in obtaining a winger as cover following the departure of Kevin Donovan to Barnsley. 21-year-old Kevin Ellison from Leicester City has joined the Grimsby Town squad at Lilleshall today, initially on trial.

"Kevin will be with us for Lilleshall, and then hopefully for the Sweden tour as well. We may try to do a similar thing with him as we did with Stuart Campbell last season." the Grimsby manager told Mariners Net, referring to the season long loan of Campbell from Filbert Street last year, before he was purchased this summer for £200,000.

Ellison is a striker who made his name in non-league football with Altrincham, scoring 14 goals in 35 starts, before Leicester City snapped him up for £50,000 in February 2001.

He is 22-years old and can play as an out and out striker, as well as on the left flank. The Liverpool born utility player made his one and only appearance for Leicester City in March 2001 - coming on as a second half substitute in front of 67,000 people at Old Trafford.

The England non-league international initially had a trial with Manchester City before trying his hand at Filbert Street. That trial led to him signing a deal until the summer of 2003.

Peter Taylor said of him: "Colin Murphy spotted Kevin while he was playing for Altrincham. Kevin has lots of pace and has done well while he has trained with us. He is one for the future and we all hope he is able to take his chance."

Moving Stuart Campbell to the right midfield, Lawrence is looking to sign a player to feature on the left wing. This may be another indication that he is poised to depart from the usual 4-4-2 lineup next season.
