Where will Grimsby be next season?

The Mariners Fly Out On Scandinavian Tour

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 20/07/2001

GRIMSBY TOWN flew out to Sweden today on their first foreign tour for 15 years today. The 19-man squad including new £250,000 signing Phil Jevons and Leicester City winger Kevin Ellison flew out from Manchester Airport this morning.

In a report in the Grimsby Telegraph, Lennie Lawrence warned them that their Scandinavian opponents would be no walkovers.

Flying to Copenhagen before going on to Malmo in Sweden the Mariners will play two games against Swedish second division opposition, Ystads FF and a Trelleborg Select XI, plus a match in Denmark against Koge BK a Danish League side.

"We mustn't underestimate them. We won't be playing against a massive standard and they're more like training games, said Lawrence But they're in the middle of their season and we have to get our match fitness up."

Jevons and Ellison are expected to make their Mariners debuts on the tour though Lawrence has said that the team will be rotated through the three games as he looks to hone his players' fitness ahead of the first division season on August 11.

On Ellison Lawrence said "He looks very useful and he's got an unbelievable left foot," he said, and on Jevons "He looks sharp and he makes some good runs. He certainly knows where the goal is. It's the standard that will be the true test for him. The hope is that he can achieve it in the first division, but he does look the part. I've got Livvo and Bradley as well and they both look sharp."
