FORMER Grimsby Town midfielder Tommy Widdrington has signed for Third Division Hartlepool United on a Bosman free transfer. The 29-year-old Geordie joins the fourth club of his career, resulting in a move back to his native Tyne & Wear.

"I've got family and friends up here so it's great to be moving back home," revealed the recent Victoria Park recruit. "I've been impressed with the set up and like what Chris and Colin have told me and I'm really looking forward to playing here."

Since leaving Southampton, the former Mariner has moved down through the divisions, experiencing both relegation and promotion at Blundell Park and relegation with Port Vale. The tigerish midfielder has now joined Hartlepool, who narrowly missed out on promotion to the second division last season.

Hartlepool manager Chris Turner spoke "Tommy brings great experience for a lad of his age. He gets plenty of tackles in and is a great talker and motivator, something we've been lacking." Tommy will now have his sights on leading 'Pool into the second division next season.
