Nicky Southall Southall was actually one of Brian Laws' better signings. Bought from Hartlepool as a replacement for the great 'Diddy' Gilbert, he actually played pretty well on either the left or right, without pulling up too many trees. He had a shaky start after being replaced Ivano Bonetti, but regained his place after Bonetti was injured by a plate of flying chicken.

Southall was eventually 'given' to Gillingham by Buckley in 1997. You may notice that only 4 of Laws' signings lasted under Buckley. These were Tony Gallimore (who was initially transfer listed), Richard Smith (who was injured most the time), Tommy Widdrington (who was on high wages, and was listed most of the time) and Kingsley Black.

The other 10 or so players were sold, sometimes wrongly, because the fact that Southall will be playing in the Premiership next season, suggests a bit of bad judgment by Mr Buckley.

Next Player: Tommy Widdrington
