Australian Stallion Due On Trial

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 30/08/2001

GRIMSBY TOWN are understood to be looking to bring an Australian defender to Blundell Park on trial. 17-year-old Rodney Madigan, currently on the books of Sydney club Marconi Stallions, has previously had a trial with Second Division Cardiff City.

Press reports from Australia indicate that Marconi are reluctant to let their young prospect depart for the UK. The 17-year-old, who has represented Australia at the U17 level, is still under contract at the Sydney club, but is reportedly ready to hand in a transfer request if the Stallions refuse to allow him to travel to England for trials with Grimsby.

Grimsby boss Lennie Lawrence criticised his defence following Monday's 4-2 defeat against Portsmouth, and vowed to turn things around in the next ten days at the back, saying: "The lack of concentration in defensive situations, the lack of awareness and poor defending was mega disappointing. Never mind about forwards on loan, that is not the issue. We have got to improve, and I have got to look at what I can do.

"I have got one loan available to me and I've got to look at long-term loans. The Scandinavian season is coming to an end shortly."

Although Madigan is almost certainly not a prospect than for the next ten days, the Australian may be one of the longer term arrivals envisaged by the Grimsby boss, as the financial constraints he is under mean that Lawrence is forced to search all over the globe for new talent.
