Lawrence: We Can Stay Top Dogs

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 25/09/2001

"We've got two homes games coming up and it's a golden chance to consolidate on a good start," said Lawrence today. "If we've got 20 points by the middle of October we can play a good chunk of the season without any fear and see what these people can really do."

"If we finish with one or two points from the next three games we won't be in that situation and we'll still be looking nervously over our shoulders," Lawrence told Stuart Rowson of the Grimsby Telegraph

"I think they'll be able to look up the table for the rest of the season if they can do it for the next three games. If we can get back to the defensive standards we set early on, we could stay in the top six.

"It's a young team and that's what they've got to be aspiring towards. It's not good enough to be saying 'we're only little Grimsby and just keep plodding on'. Those days are gone - I hope.

"If we can keep this team together for the next couple of years and get a new stadium, this club could take off."

Wise words from Lennie and an inspiration to the supporters, many of whom are wondering just when the bubble will burst. Sure there are some problems particularly in defence and though the Mariners have been lucky, luck does not last forever so Town's standing in the league at this moment indicates that they are there on merit. Luck alone could not achieve that.

Every game they play the team gain a little more experience playing together. It should be remembered that some of them never met until the start of the season and it takes time to forge a good understanding of each others play.
