Liverpool Report Part 5

By: Richard Lord
Date: 11/10/2001

Home > 2001-2002 Season > Reports > Liverpool (a)

Fans started to filer out of the stadium, singing as they went. It had been a long match and I don't think any of us expected the game to finish late. Extra time would just have been a dream but it had become reality. A win would have been an even more distant dream, but again it was reality. Simply unbelievable.

Once we left the ground we then had to mix in with the disgruntled home fans. Perhaps it was a bit adventurous to start singing "2-1 to the Mariners" right in front of them, but that is what happened. Most of the Liverpool fans were very friendly and I spoke to one or two as I made my way back to the coach. "At least now we can concentrate on the league" said one. Another actually said he was impressed with us, although on another day we would have lost 10-0, or so he reckoned.

2250 We were back on the coach. Everyone was talking about the game of their life. Perhaps it was a bit too soon to judge but just about everyone came to the conclusion that the 2-1 win at Liverpool was the best game they'd ever been to. People were comparing the win to the 1-0 win over Everton back in the eighties. Most were in agreement that this was better.

2310 The bus finally starts up its engine, but it takes a while longer to get going. It looked as if we were the last coach to arrive and the last to leave. Eventually everyone calmed down as the coach got quieter. It was a long journey home but we didn't really care. I doubt any fans would have been talking about anything other than the match.

0025 The bus stopped for a '5-minute toilet break', which turned out to be about 20 minutes.

0200 Again the bus stopped at a service station where most people awoke to get something to eat and drink. When we departed most people settled down and went to sleep.

0310 The coach finally gets us back home. I doubt there would have been a better day in my life than Tuesday 9 October, 2001.
