Sunderland Interested In Grimsby's Danny Coyne?

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 30/10/2001

SUNDERLAND are reported to be interested in Grimsby's goalkeeper Danny Coyne. It comes as no surprise with Danny's performances over the last two seasons. He was also linked with Aston Villa last season and a number of other clubs were also reported to be interested in him.

It appears that Sunderland's interest is serious. So much so that Peter Reid, their manager watched Coyne in the Manchester City game. The Grimsby Telegraph who released the news said that Reid is understood to be on the lookout for an understudy for Danish international Thomas Sorensen and could be lining up a bid for the Mariners' Player of the Year last season.

Lennie Lawrence confirmed that Reid had been at Maine Road but no official contact had been made. "There's been no bids and I would say so if there had been. I haven't heard anything from Sunderland, but Peter Reid was at the game last Tuesday. He might have been watching Danny, but I don't know anything about it."

It was Danny Coyne who Gerard Houllier praised the most after the Liverpool game and picked him as man of the match.

It is thought that the Town board would be keen to sell Coyne with the club being short of cash and it would be difficult for them to turn down any serious offer.
