Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby be next season?

Lawrence Departure Imminent?

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 31/10/2001

The rumour mill is now in full swing regarding the future of Lennie Lawrence, Grimsby Town's manager. There is speculation that he may resign shortly and move on to Barnsley or be sacked by the board who are concerned about the financial problems relegation would bring to the club.

I spoke to a usually reliable source close to the club today and asked exactly what Lennie's position was.

I was told that if Town win against Wimbledon on Saturday and Sheffield Wednesday next week the board would not act. If the result on Saturday goes against us he may not get a chance to manage the Sheffield game. My understanding was that the board could act more quickly than that but there was no information on when the board were meeting again.

Planet Football, on the other hand, are suggesting that Lennie is in the frame as Director of Football at Barnsley and may himself be seeking an end to his contract.

Things should be clearer in the next 24 hours if not before with the club issuing a statement either confirming or denying the claims.

Based on all the information coming in, some just plain supposition, Lawrence's future at Grimsby Town seems to be in doubt.

Planet Football also reported that Sunderland are likely to make a bid for Danny Coyne saying "Reid is likely to tempt Lawrence with a six-figure cash offer plus unsettled winger John Oster, who has already expressed a desire to return to his former stamping ground in a bid to reacquaint himself with regular first-team action."

Other reports today state that Oster has walked out on his loan deal with First Division Barnsley after a training ground bust-up with caretaker boss Glynn Hodges. The on-loan Sunderland ace walked out of Oakwell after being asked to train with the youngsters on Saturday and was promptly axed from the squad for Sunday's clash with West Brom.
