The Fishy - Grimsby Town FC

Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby be next season?

Thompson Treble Sinks York

ON A WET and dismal afternoon, a few hardy souls turned out to watch Town reserves take on York City reserves. The Town line-up included the returning Michael Jeffery, as well as Paul Raven and David Smith.

The first half was a lively end to game, with York coming close on three occasions in the first ten minutes. After 11 minutes however it was Town who went ahead when Jeffery’s shot rebounded off the bar to Thompson who made no mistake from close range.

After 18 minutes, Jeffery again set up Thompson for his and Town’s second goal. Town were well on top now, and after 28 minutes Thompson went on a run of his own, and completed his hat-trick with a well taken goal after taking on two York defenders.

With just five minutes of the half remaining, Jeffery hit a twenty five yard lob shot that hit the under side of the bar and went in to make it 4-0. The score was a reflection of their fine performance, but that unfortunately were it ended.

The second was not a memorable one, as the game was mainly played out in midfield. Steve Croudson got more of a workout in the second half, as he made several fine saves. There wasn't too much to be done about York’s only goal though, as it was scored from close range following a corner.

Jeffery did have a late chance to add to Town’s tally, but the chance was not taken. On the plus side, the return from injury players seemed to get through the game ok, and this can only be a bonus for LL’s depleted squad.

I haven't mentioned the second half too much, but then if you had witnessed it compared to the first one then you would understand why.

Town: Croudson, Ward, Smith, Busscher, Ford, Raven (Moran 75), Downes, Bolder, Jeffery, Thompson (Thorne 85), Hockless (Mansaram 75)
Not used: Ermes, Kirwin.

I have it on good authority that a player from Swiss club Young Boys is coming to Town on trial. He is a defender, and is also an international. If I had placed my report on earlier, I could have claimed it as an exclusive!! If it hasn't already been on the site yet, then I still can.

Town reserves are at home again next week, when they entertain Shrewsbury Town.
