Question of the Week

Who will go down?

Pouton On The Comeback Trail

GRIMSBY TOWN midfielder Alan Pouton is slowly heading in the right direction as he recovers from his broken ankle that was sustained in the 1-1 draw with Wolves last month. Pouton spoke of his injury to the Sports Telegraph and his hopes of when he'll be back in action.

"There isn't a certain date and I don't want to set myself any targets because you only feel disappointed if you don't meet them. Realistically I'm hoping to be ready for the middle of February.

"When I first did it I knew there was something wrong but it's hard to tell at first. It's the first time I've broken anything and they told me there could have been more complications with ligaments but it's settled down quite well now. When you break something you're worried that it won't be as strong as it was when you get back.

"I'm taking it very slowly and doing very light walking and gentle cycling. I just need to build my calf muscles up so that I can do the jogging when the time comes."

Ahead of the Tuesday night cup clash against his former club York, Alan continued: "It's disappointing to see the state the club are in. I had a good three and a half years there and they were a great bunch of lads. The supporters were good to me and the club is similar to Grimsby. It's a close-knit club and nobody wants to see any club go down - it's a shame for football in general.

"I would hate to watch a former club go out of existence and it seems like the more money the big clubs in the Premiership generate, the less the smaller clubs are getting, and now they're struggling."

But on the night the 24-year old insists there will be no divided loyalties. "I'm a Grimsby Town player and we're not in the best financial situation ourselves. My main concern is us. They'll be fighting for their lives but I want us to get a result and go on and play Fulham because it will bring a much-needed boost to our club."
