THE Football League has launched legal action against Carlton Communications and Granada Media the owners of the failed broadcaster ITV Digital for £178.5m which is owed to the league.

The claim was filed in the UK's High Court. "An application has been made for an early hearing date, due to the severe financial crisis facing the League and its clubs," the League said.

"From the outset of this dispute, the Football League has made it abundantly clear that it will, if necessary, use all options to pursue Carlton and Granada for monies outstanding from our broadcasting agreement," said David Burns.

The League may also claim against the ITV network as a whole and it may claim damages of £500m from ITV Digital's liquidators.
