Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby be next season?

Town's Cash Crisis Hits Everyone Hard!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 30/05/2002

GRIMSBY Town owes its players more than £100,000 in bonuses for staying in the first division last season, but the money was only due to be paid if the club received the £2.5-million from ITV Digital this summer.

Manager Paul Groves and keeper Danny Coyne reported to be the biggest losers.

The Grimsby Telegraph revealed the situation today with the revelation that the cost cutting included the axing of the Reserve team which came as a surprise to management team Paul Groves and Graham Rodger who had not formally agreed to the measures.

But the Grimsby Telegraph's understanding is that the squad were set to receive £250 a-game bonus per man if they beat the drop. Groves, Coyne and Danny Butterfield all played more than 40 games last season and are owed almost £35,000 between them.

The players are expected to hold a meeting when they return for pre-season training on July 3 to give the green light to the club's proposals over appearance bonuses. They will be asked to accept deferred payment on the bonuses - around £500-a-match for most.

The club wants to hold back the payments until they receive some money either from the re-sale of the TV rights, or the legal action against Carlton and Granada by the Football League and the players are expected to agree providing they receive the money they are owed.

The non-playing staff are looking at pay cuts of between five and 20 per cent within the next month.
