Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby be next season?

Dr Fishy's Player Of The Year - Week 7

By: Dr Fishy
Date: 16/06/2002

SO we move into week 7 and so far we have featured 10 of the 20 players in my Player of the Year Table. Burnett, Willems, Jeffrey, Jevons, Coldicott, Butterfield, Campbell, Gallimore, Groves and Chapman have all gone, now we move into the Top 10.

In 10th place is someone who missed a large part of the season but when he played the team's results picked up. Captain John McDermott is the first of this week's duo to be analysed, earning himself an overall grade of C+

McDermott was graded 20 times during the course of the season and accumulated 165 points equating to 8.3 out of ten. Macca received a C+ 35% of the time, with his best grade being a B and his worst a C- joining an elite list in not ever being given a D or lower.

His best run obviously stretched over the 20 games he was graded in, and his worst run came over just three matches, showing it didn't take long to regain his form. He made a return to the squad in February and played into September before suffering an horrific calf injury.

Although he never got an A grade, he did get eight Bs and 12 Cs showing that he was one of the most consistent performers in the team.

In ninth position we have youngster Simon Ford. Currently out-of-contract, he makes it into the top ten after impressing since he was thrown into the team unexpectedly at Preston just before Christmas.

Like a lot of other players, Ford achieved an overall grade of C+ but is slightly higher than the rest because he got 8.4 out of ten after gaining 101 points in the 12 games he was marked in.

Although C+ was worked out as his average grade, he only ever received that particular grade once, showing he dipped and rose above it most of the time. His best grade was a B, coming in the game in which he also scored against Portsmouth just before the New Year.

His worst grade was amazingly just a C but he got this on quite a few occasions, including his debut at Deep Dale. His best run was over all 12 games because he never got a D and his worst run was over just a couple of games. So Ford never went three games on the trot without getting at least a B-.

In total the former Charlton defender got no As but seven Bs and 5 Cs. Let's hope that he accepts any contract offer Town can give him next season as he is seen as an integral part of the Mariners' future.

Next week sees the return of a striker, only two have been featured so far (Jevons and Jeffrey). The other player is a midfielder, and was graded 30 times last season. More will be revealed in a week's time.
