Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby be next season?

Santos Decision Looms

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 04/11/2002

GRIMSBY still await the decision of Cape Verde international Georges Santos as to whether he will sign a new contract to stay at Blundell Park until the season's end. Despite rumours that Santos has left the area, a club spokesman claimed today that Town still maintained an interest in him.

"The club are still interested, but there is no news as yet. He left us last week but we are hopeful a deal can be done as we would like to keep him until the end of the season. He is suspended for another two games anyway, so that's another fortnight, which gives us a bit more time to get something sorted out.

"We imagine it will be decided one way or the other by the end of this week. We want him to stay but it is a question of carving out the right package that suits both him and the club."

  • Returning hero John Oster thought that, after Saturday's performance against Gillingham, Grimsby's position in the league belied their true potential. "There's no reason why we can't pick up and get out of trouble. We've got some quality players here and there's no reason why we can't go up the League."

Oster was also pleased with his own performance after moving to Grimsby on a month-long loan from Sunderland. "That must be the first competitive League game I've had for a couple of years and it was nice to be playing at 3pm on a Saturday rather than 7pm on a Monday for the Reserves!"

New Middlesborough loanee Jason Gavin was also pleased after the defender's first game for the Mariners and hopes the gradual improvement will continue with Saturday's crunch game with Stoke City, when Town have the chance to move out of the bottom three.

"Obviously until the last five minutes we were hoping to get the three points. We were disappointed when they scored but I'm more or less pleased with the way I played. I didn't know hardly any of the names of the players I was on the team with, so it's very difficult. In the last 20 minutes I got really comfortable and I really enjoyed it at the end," said the Irishman.

  • Martin Pringle was today released by Charlton Athletic, and is being touted as a possible replacement for Steven Kabba if the Palace striker fails to sign up for a loan extension until the end of the season. The 32-year-old Swede impressed during a loan spell at the end of last year's campaign, which was tragically curtailed when Pringle suffered a double fracture of his leg against Stockport after a horrendous take by County's Dave Challinor (left).

  • Alan Pouton will miss the game with Stoke City at the Brittania Stadium on Saturday after receiving a one-match suspension for picking up five yellow cards this season.
