Town Turn The Tables!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 19/03/2003

GRIMSBY Town turned the tables last night after scoring a last minute goal instead of being on the receiving end as they have been many times this season. Scoring in the last minute ensured Rotherham had no chance to get back into the game.

The Grimsby Telegraph compared the goal to the Golden Goal scored at Wembley by Wayne Burnett.

Graeme Rodger in particular was highly delighted by the finishing touch of Oster saying; "I thought Livvo might kill the game off in the corner but he showed his experience."

"Johnny Oster made an unbelievable run to get beyond the full-back and it was a fantastic delivery by Livvo and a fantastic finish by Johnny as the ball reared up as it got to him."

Livvo said; "We looked like we were coming away with a point, and with the ball in the corner I was in two minds whether to keep it there to run the clock down or cross it in."

"Fortunately, I saw John one-on-one in the box and I put it in there. It could have gone over the bar, or been put out for a corner, so I just swung it in and John did superb to keep it down and put it in the goal.

"I think seeing it was John made my mind up to whip it in, because we know he is capable of getting on the end of things with his skill and little bit of pace, and he did it and made it a great night."

Praising the whole team Rodger continued; "Simon Ford is maturing, he is reducing his errors in each game he plays."

"George (Santos) is an absolute colossus. The man is a beast. The other players draw confidence from him."

A great save by Danny Coyne saved the game and Rodger described it: "I was at the other end and I saw the ball heading towards the corner of the net and then this hand just came from nowhere to keep the ball out. To me it was just like the Gordon Banks save."

"The players have asked me to mention the fans. They were brilliant. There was a decent following and they got behind us and stuck with us. It was if they were willing us on, willing the ball out of our goal in the second half. We need them to stay with us."
