Question of the Week

Who will go down?

Who will he Buy? Part Three

By: Richard Hubbert
Date: 31/05/2003

NOW for the third instalment of "who will he buy?", where we take a hopeful but realistic look at who Paul Groves may swoop for in this summers transfer market.

Bruce Dyer
Bruce Dyer

The Facts
Thoroughly experienced forward who has played in at the top level of football league football most of his career with Crystal Palace, Watford and Barnsley, whom released him this week after failing to meet his wage demands. Determined and powerful, Dyer finished the Tyke’s top scorer for the third season in a row last year with 18 goals.

Is a move likely?
It all depends on whether Town can meet his wage demands - and if Barnsley can’t, it suggests that neither will Town. Also, now that Dyer has left Oakwell, he surely has aspirations to play in the first division again next season.
Likeliness Rating: 1

Michael Keane
Michael Keane

The Facts
Most Town fans know all about "Keano" who was on loan at Town at the end of last season. He is a versatile midfielder who plays with total commitment and passion. Comfortable on either the left, right or in the centre, Paul Groves has made no secret of his desire to keep Keane for next season.

Is a move likely?
It does seem that Preston are willing to sell, at the right price. However, it all depends on whether the Mariners can meet Preston’s demands. Alternatively, if a permanent deal cannot be struck, a season long loan could be arranged with Keane only being 21.
Likeliness Rating: 5

Matt Carragher
Matt Carragher

The Facts
Port Vale captain who was strangely released by Brian Horton a few weeks ago. Former Wigan defender who has been with Vale since 1997 and has developed from being a right back into a commanding centre half.

Is a move likely?
Only if George Santos goes really. Carragher would want decent wages, but may not be out of Town’s price range. Has vast experience at division two level and has the added advantage of being able to play at right full back.
Likeliness Rating: 4

Tony Crane
Tony Crane

The Facts
Towering 6 foot 5 utility man who can play in central defence of midfield. A product of Sheffield Wednesday’s youth system, who having played bit-parts in their previous few seasons, was released in a mass exodus of players shown the door by Owl’s boss Chris Turner.

Is a move likely?
Would undoubtedly be a player who would give Town an extra dimension with his height an obvious threat and advantage. Whether Santos stays or not, the acquisition of a tall, versatile player, coming relatively cheap would be reasonably attractive. But whether this is what Grovesy is looking for remains to be seen.
Likeliness Rating: 2

Ratings

5 Distinct possibility of signing
4 Depends on wages and willingness to move
3 Might need lots of persuasion to sign any contract
2 May be willing to move, but will Town be interested?
1 Long shot
