The Fishy - Grimsby Town FC

Question of the Week

Who will go down?

Grimsby 3-1 Wycombe

GRIMSBY Town made it two victories in three days as they beat Wycombe 3-1 at Blundell Park this afternoon. Goals from Barnard, Boulding and Cas made sure of a comfortable win on the back of Saturday's performance.

Iain Anderson was left out of the squad through injury, so Groves brought himself into the side and played in the centre with Campbell pushing out wide on the left.

Rowan was given the nod ahead of Laurens Ten Heuvel to partner Michael Boulding up front. Crowe continued at right back with Marcel Cas ahead of him on the wing.

It took plenty of time for both sides to settle, with Wycombe looking to attack down the right and left flanks. Town looked to Rowan for the hold-up play but it was the defence that had to begin well.

The opening goal arrived after 27 minutes when Barnard struck a perfect free kick into the right hand side of the net. Boulding had been tumbled to win the free kick and the left back floated the ball in to break the deadlock.

On the stroke of half time Groves had to head over his own bar from virtually a yard out of his own goal when Onoura's far-post knock-down travelled across the goal and was destined to be prodded in when Groves arrived to amazingly clear.

The Mariners started the second half in bright fashion and soon had a two-goal cushion. Campbell broke free down the left and cut a perfect ball back to Boulding, who smashed home his fourth goal of the season.

Wycombe broke up play by making several substitutions, but the changes failed to bring about a different response from Laurie Sanchez's team.

Marcel Cas was having an increasing influence on the game and he should have scored when he raced through and held of two challengers, only to clip the ball straight at the keeper.

But minutes later, almost in a repeat scenario, Cas raced through once more, held off his challengers, and despite losing control at one point or another in the area, he finally clipped the ball over the keeper to make it 3-0.

Wes Parker and Darren Mansaram both had run-outs in replace of Barnard and Cas, but into injury time the Mariners conceded a late goal when Mapes stabbed home past Davison.

Wycombe could have had a couple of goals during the afternoon but their defence really was exposed by the pace of Cas and Boulding, also through the strength of Rowan, who did his chances of first team action no harm at all.
