The Fishy - Grimsby Town FC

Question of the Week

Who will go down?

Feedback From You

The Fishy appreciates feedback from our readers and we have had a number over the last few days mainly concerning Paul Groves as manager but also where they see us going.

Philsab Says;

Well, sorry to admit, it but I think Groves should move aside. While the board run the team on financial constraints we're are going to get nowhere fast. You only get out what you put in. Time for a new manager full time not just on off the bench .I do still believe that we can be a strong hope of something this season but it need a full time manager to get the best from the players. Not just the mate team sheet. Macca and Fordy are not on the same planet. With what we have got we could do some damage but the tools need to be in the right hands.

Grass-Roots says:

A bloke is in falling out of a plane and his parachute fails, he gets to 5000 feet and passes another bloke coming up the other way - "do you know any decent parachute shops?" he says to the bloke, "no" he replies, "do you know any decent gas fitters?"

We don't get much to look forward to being Grimsby Fans. In recent years there hasn't been a lot - Beating Burnley 6-5 was fun, obviously knocking Liverpool out of the cup in their own back yard, and of course the double Wembley season 5 odd years ago.

What do we have now?

Were you lot (like me) looking forward to actually winning a few games this season? yo-yoing around 5th - 10th in the league and hoping for the play off's?

Teams fearing playing us as we have dropped a division? Managers saying things like "we will be hoping for 3 points tonight as we are away at Grimsby on Saturday and that will be a tough one?"

We are sh*** and an embarrassment. We need a new manager and fast, we are in freefall and nobody will pull the cord!

But Alan Readman says:

Batten Down the Hatches

So where do we go from here? Everyone on this site has been offering an opinion. So here is mine.

First of all, I am not going to jump on the 'Sack the Manager' or 'Pillory the Board' bandwagon. To me Paul Groves comes across as totally committed to GTFC. From day one the odds have been stacked against him making it difficult to judge fairly his managerial ability.

The side he assembled over the summer is, on paper, strong enough to do well in this division. The Board backed him and did so within sensible financial limits. The ill luck of having to do without players as key as Pouton, Anderson, Hamilton and Coldicott has had much to do with recent results. Iain Anderson, in particular, looked an inspired signing before his sending-off and injury.

Having said all that, something is clearly wrong and it doesn't take an Einstein, or an Alan Hansen, to work it out.

Town teams throughout my time have generally had a reasonably good defence. Scoring goals has usually been the problem. This season, and last, they are leaking goals galore. Just look at the number of shots raining in match by match, home as well as away. Thank goodness for Aidan Davison otherwise we would already be half way to matching last year's horrendous tally.

I don't agree with Billo that Friday's 8-1 hammering at Hartlepool was just another defeat. It was catastrophic. It will remain in the stats throughout the season as the 2nd Division's heaviest defeat. It was the disaster that had been waiting to happen.

So how do we stop another? Assuming the option of adding more new players doesn't apply, one possible answer would be to bring in a specialist coach to work with the defence. It's hardly a novel or earth-shattering idea. Other clubs do it to good effect. Just as businesses bring in consultants to meet specific needs.

So why not Town? In no way should it be seen as demeaning the position of the manager. It is a simple, relatively inexpensive and hopefully temporary expedient to help out at a time of need.

Just an idea. Something needs to be done. That's for sure.
