Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby be next season?

Town to Sign Armstrong

By: Richard Hubbert
Date: 22/02/2004

SHEFFIELD Wednesday manager Chris Turner has revealed to the club's official web site that Mariners' caretaker boss Graham Rodger is interested in signing Owls defender/midfielder Craig Armstrong, who could be playing for the Mariners on Tuesday night if a deal is wrapped up by Monday.

Armstrong, a former Nottingham Forest trainee who signed for the Hillsborough side in 2002 for £100,000 from Huddersfield Town, has fallen out of favour this season, making just five starts for the Yorkshire side. At home either at left full back or in midfield, Armstrong was a regular in the Huddersfield side that so nearly got promotion in the late nineteen nineties, but has found life difficult with Wednesday.

Turner said that "I've looked at Craig over the last six or seven games and made a decision to make him available for a loan or permanent deal.

"I spoke to Graham Rodger on Friday and Craig may go there on Monday."

Armstrong was left out of the Wednesday squad that played Rushden yesterday after starting the previous few games for the Owls, but Turner has obviously decided that it is time for him to move on. Where Rodger sees Armstrong in his plans, is questionable. Armstrong can play down the left, but also in central midfield. With a surplus of talent down the flanks, including Iain Anderson, Graham Hockless, Stuart Campbell and Phil Jevons, Armstrong could well be used as central midfielder whilst Stacy Coldicott regains full fitness.
