Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby be next season?

Have We Turned the Corner?

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 08/12/2004

THE Mariners win against Notts County last night should boost the confidences of both the players and the fans. Town have been having great difficulty in finding the net once, so the 3 goals were a break through.

On paper, Notts County are at about the same level as Town, looking at the points table, so it would be fair to say that we were evenly matched.

But the most encouraging thing was the fact that County recovered twice and struck back with two goals of their own. Going by previous games, that should have been enough to start the rot but Town came back to score the winner, which is a most encouraging sign.

This particular division, is still wide open for a good team and if Town can use this win as a spur, we might, at last, see some signs that we are capable of reaching the top tier of the division, instead of worrying about the Conference League.

Scunthorpe United might be topping the table at the moment, but "there is many a slip 'tween cup and lip" and it only needs them to falter and a team that is determined enough could knock them off their perch.

Those who go the games talk about the 'good' players we have. If that is true and we do have capable players, then there is no reason that we cannot be one of the teams contending for promotion.

According to reports, it seems all we need to do is get our act together, get some consistency and we stand a very good chance of being contenders.

Slade continues to search for a striker and is looking at 4 possibles at the moment. There are those however who feel that a new striker is not the answer and we should be looking to bolster the midfield and defence. (See Stew-00's comments below)

Be that as it may, Town have produced a result, not against one of the best teams in the division, that will come on Saturday, but against a close competitor for points and that is what Russell Slade has been looking for. A change in fortune and chances being taken.

Let us hope that this result is the springboard for more successes as it brings with it restored confidence to all involved. Long may it last!

Addendum:

On new strikers Stew-00 comments;

"It appears that 2 of Russell Slade's striker targets are Danny Allsopp from Hull City (could be a decent signing) and former town loanee, Lee (I get injured stepping off a train and I will cry if I get relegated to the bench and go home) Thorpe from Bristol Rovers.

Thought we would have learned our lesson with selfish losers who spit their dummies out. Eh stanno?"

Ouch!
