Mansfield Preview

THE Mariners take a trip to Mansfield Town on Saturday, who like Town, look set to finish the season in mid-table obscurity, despite being one of the favourites for promotion at the start of the season.

Mansfield's season will be remembered for the major disruption that saw ex manager Keith Curle, depart the club back in November in somewhat controversial circumstances. The former Man City defender was accused of bullying a youth player, was suspended and then sacked in an affair that was only resolved four weeks ago. The ongoing investigation into Curle's conduct meant that caretaker boss Carlton Palmer was not able to take the job permanently until 9th March. Initially, Mansfield's form under Palmer was poor, but with no win in his first five games, but consistency has been their problem - meaning that the play-offs, now 8 points away, seem unlikely.
Former Manchester United keeper' Kevin Pilkington is the man between the sticks for the Stags. Now in his 5th season with the club, Pilkington is one of the longest serving players for the club. Young defender Jake Buxton (left) is just 19, but has made 30 appearances this term at the back. Alex Neil is a midfielder who was initially made surplus to requirements by Carlton Palmer, but has played his way back into the reckoning after some decent performances. The Scottish midfielder has experience with Barnsley and Airdrie. Simon Brown is a midfielder who was snapped up by Palmer for £50,000 in December - one of the few transfers this season in League Two to command a transfer fee. In attack, Derek Asamoah recently departed to Lincoln, placing greater pressure of Richie Barker, the former Macclesfield and Rotherham forward who arrived in November and has scored 9 goals for the Stags.
Alex John Baptiste (left). Talented young defender who has caught the eye of some Premiership scouts after some fine performances. Baptiste is a product of the Youth system at Field Mill. But despite his young age, being just 19, Baptiste has appeared in most of Mansfield's game this season, and whether he can cope with Town's attackers will be key to the outcome of the game.

Town haven't had the best of luck against the Stags, having lost to them more times than they have won. Their record at Field Mill is pretty dreadful too, without a win there since 1956. Victories at Blundell Park have been easier to come by, beating them at Blundell Park on the last two occasions.

Town last met Mansfield back in August where Town ran out 2-0 winners to move up to 9th place in the table. Goals from Thomas Pinault and Jason Crowe at either ends of the game secured victory for Town. The last time the two sides met at Field Mill was in 1991, when the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
