TOWN have signed former Cambridge United defender Tom Newey on a one year deal. Newey was highly regarded by the Cambridge fans.

Town boss Russell Slade was delighted to finally get the left-sided defender he has been looking for since the departure of Ronnie Bull. Speaking of his acquisition, the Town boss told Radio Humberside: "He has got great energy, a decent left foot and he's still getting better. At the age of 22 he's already got 100 games under his belt."

Newey was relieved to be joining a new club after agreeing terms with Grimsby. "It is great to have got sorted," he told Mariners Net. "I know a couple of the lads, which always helps."

He was released by Leeds United to join Leyton Orient on a free transfer. With 50 League appearances he scored 3 times but he fell out of favour and joined Cambridge in January 2005 on loan. In March 2005 he signed on a free transfer until the end of the season.

A hard-working player who prefers to play left-back. Cambridge supporters were said to be disappointed that the club didn't even try to offer him a deal for next season, but it was purely down to finances at the cash strapped club. He is said to be one of their best players in the run-in and a popular member of the squad.
