What a Whalley!

FORMER Wigan midfielder Gareth Whalley has turned down a move to Blundell Park after opting to play for League One side Swindon instead. The 31-year-old had been released by the Premiership new boys this summer and had attracted interest from several clubs, including Town.

"We did speak to Gareth and I spoke to Paul Jewell about him as well," Russell Slade told Mariners Net. "But with his quality, there was always going to be a lot of interest when you think he has been playing regularly in the Championship.

"I was hoping to speak to him again this weekend and I knew that Swindon had spoken to him. But once the link between ourselves and him was out, I knew it would be harder to tie him down and he got in touch on Saturday morning to tell me he was accepting the offer from Swindon."

The Town boss is still hoping to sign two midfielders before the season starts. Former Lincoln player Ciaran Toner has reportedly impressed Slade at the army camp, and the Town boss still hasn't abandoned signing a French-based player before the summer.
