Beat the Bookies: Week 4

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 17/08/2005

LAST week's postponenment meant that I never found out whether Rob Jones would have scored against Chester.

Unfortunately the bookies have reduced the odds of Jones finding the net in Town's next game against Darlington from 12-1 to 9-1, meaning this week I look elsewhere for value.

The bookies have finally recognised the existence of Tom Newey and bet365.com are offering 7/1 on Town's set piece taker scoring against Darlo, or 25/1 to score the first goal of Saturday's game. It's tempting, especially if you fancy Grimsby to get a penalty against the Quakers.

Town should beat Darlington in Saturday's game at Blundell Park, and with betfair.com you can currently get odds of 2.4 (or 7/5) that they will do just that.

Hull City should also record their first win of the season if they beat Brighton at the KC on Saturday. The Tigers are currently 1.91 (or 9/10) to pick up their first three points of the season with betfair.com. City are strong at home and only narrowly lost 1-0 at Wolves last weekend. 1.91, in my opinion, represents a good chance to almost double your money over the course of 90 minutes.

Those fancying an upset could do worse than back Scunthorpe to record their first away win of the season at Forest, who have hardly set the league alight after last season's relegation. You can currently get odds of 6.4 (or 11/2) on Brian Laws getting one over his former club with betfair.com. .

Scunny have had a decent start to the campaign, winning one, drawing one and losing one of their first three games in League One. This week Brian Laws strengthened his sqaud with the acquisition of striker Billy Sharp from Sheff Utd for £100K, going some way to make up for the loss of Paul Hayes.

Rather than going for the "Crown Jewels" of a Scunthorpe away win at the City Ground, instead I am turning to IG Index's Scunthorpe Mini Performance market (Win 25, Draw 10, Goal 10). IG Index are offering a spread of 13-16 on this market. Buying Scunthorpe at 16 for 62.5p for point exposes me to a maximum loss of £10 (my weekly quota!) if the Iron lose and do not score. On the other hand a Scunny win and three Iron goals would net around 25 quid profit. Of course for a Grimsby fan the joy of betting on Scuthorpe to do well is that you cannot lose!
