Michael Keane Interview

By: Jake Olley
Date: 12/03/2006

MICHAEL Keane only played seven games for the Mariners at the end of the 2002-2003 season, but made a favourable impression with his passion and enthusiasm for the game. Keane scored in Town's last two games in what is now the Championship.

In the short time you were at Blundell Park you were very popular. Would you have liked to have stayed at Grimsby if we'd stayed up that year?

Yes I really enjoyed my time there. Pity they went down. I still watch their results and wish them well for the future.

Grimsby finished bottom the season you were there and then got relegated the next season. Did you detect a club in freefall in your brief time here?

No I thought they would bounce straight back up but they will this year...

A year after leaving Grimsby you joined our neighbours Hull. How do the two clubs compare?

I spoke to Hull in the summer of that year and they were a rich club wanting success. I also enjoyed my time there. I scored seven goals in 13 games but they wanted rid of me; Grimsby wanted me to stay.

How does League One compare to the Championship?

The Championship is a superb league. League one is weird as everybody beats each other, it doesn't happen in The Championship.

Can Rotherham stay up this season?

Yes definitely we are good enough.

When does your contract at Rotherham end?

17 months left so the end of next season

Who is the best manager you have worked with?

David Moyes [Preston] was the best, very good overall; Peter Taylor [Hull] is a great coach.

Do you have a message for the Grimsby Town fans?

Yes keep going - I might need a club very soon!

As an Irishman will you be supporting England in the World Cup?

No but I will be watching as they have players you look up to but watch out for the Republic of Ireland in the next few years. We will be a good young team.

Good luck to all at Grimsby Town

We'd also like to take this chance to thank Michael Keane who took time out from his busy schedule to do this interview for Town fans.
