Wrexham Preview

By: Richard Lord
Date: 31/03/2006

IT'S another decisive weekend at the top of League Two as Grimsby entertain Wrexham at Blundell Park. Whilst the Mariners harbour thoughts of automatic promotion, the Dragons have the play-offs well in their sight.

The Opposition

Overview
Wrexham have come into some good form of late - especially away from home, where they have picked up a significant amount of points in recent weeks. For much of the season they had relied on their home form, but with just eight games to go the Dragons have discovered the ability to grind out victories on their travels. Denis Smith's (left) team's first away win of the season didn't come until mid-November when they recorded a 3-0 victory at Oxford. A 2-0 win at Rushden in January began a six-game away sequence that has seen them lose just once (3-2 at Macclesfield). At the beginning of 2006 the play-offs appeared to be just out of reach, but now - two points behind the teams above them and with a game in hand - a top-seven finish is very much a possibility.

Their Squad
Russell Slade's summer target Michael Ingham lines up in goal, with 6' 7'' Trinidad and Tobago defender Dennis Lawrence just in front of him. The versatile Andy Holt can play in defence or midfield, and captain Darren Ferguson (left) is the driving force in the middle of the park. Youngster Matt Derbyshire, on loan from Blackburn, has eight goals in nine starts at the Racecourse Ground.

Key Player
22-year old midfielder Mark Jones (left) has notched 15 goals this season, although only two have come in his last 11 appearances. Jones, who joined Wrexham as a trainee in 2002, was born in the Welsh town and is a real crowd favourite.

Team News

TownWrexham

  • Grimsby could have to make do without midfielders Curtis Woodhouse and Gary Cohen. The pair have been struggling with hip and neck problems respectively, although both have trained towards the end of the week. Otherwise it'll be down to the manager on whether he gives the same set of players - who looked so lacklustre at Lincoln - a chance to redeem themselves this weekend.

    Head to Head

It's a nice round half-century of games played between the two sides, and it's a relatively even record to match. Wrexham have the slight upper hand, having won 20 games to Grimsby's 19, and having scored five more goals in the process. Many of the Mariners fans' fondest memories against the Dragons probably come from the 5-1 home win back in April 1991 when Gary Birtles scored a hat-trick.

    Last Meeting

Glen Downey was the unlikely hero as his header secured three points on New Year's Eve. The defender was called upon for a rare appearance in the black and white stripes (it was probably all blue on the day) because of Slade's injury-ravaged squad, and his goal six minutes from time made it three wins out of three for the Mariners over the Christmas break.

Wrexham Team: Ingham, Bayliss, Danny Williams (sent off 90), Lawrence, Roche, Crowell, Ferguson, Mark Jones, Holt, Bennett (Warhurst 76), Walters

    Prediction

Grimsby have the chance to make it five consecutive home wins if they beat Wrexham, but following their heavy defeat at Lincoln last weekend (and the improvement in Wrexham's away form) it'll be a tough task facing the Mariners.

    1-1
