Up The Mariners

By: Dave Boylen
Date: 04/07/2006

IT seems that my previous article has stirred up a number of discussions on this site. For those who do not know my background let me explain my passion for this Town, and most important the Football Club.

Home > Features > Dave Boylen > Up the Mariners

The football club first, one of the posters is quite correct when he said that over the years Dave Boylen had been asked to help out at the football club, but never on a full time basis, and also he was quite correct when he also said that it is not a good thing to mix the love of the football club with a business involvement at the club.

I was fortunate to play for Grimsby Town for thirteen years. The Mariners gave me a chance in the sixties when a lot of other clubs around the Manchester area where I come from were in doubt about my size.

I always believed in my own ability and was highly delighted to sign a professional contract with the Mariners and enjoyed my stay at the football club. I have to say this - the supporters who pay their hard-earned money every week, along with the season ticket holders who pay their money up front at the start of the season, they have got my utmost respect, they are gems, the club needs that money to survive.

Another thing I want to put straight about the guy who called me "an absolute first class pratt". He does not even know me, would an "absolute pratt" organise two after-dinner talks for the Grimsby Town Youth Development which raised in the region of nearly £4,000, just so we can hopefully pay the wages of some of these young players that will eventually break through to the first team? That to me is a genuine Grimsby Town Supporter who cares about the Football Club.

I would like to know what planet this guy comes from, is he really a Grimsby Town supporter or is he somebody who just likes to make a rant and rave on certain issues. I agree that if you express yourself in a article you are there to be shot at, and I accept that is the case, but also I have got the right to answer back if I think I am right.

Also I am involved in a charity that has been ongoing for ten years, The Artie White Foundation which has raised in the region Of £250,000 which we are all proud of, and all the money goes to local deserving causes.

Also I must apologise for not using my spell check on the computer. What a thing to pick on the man must be very sad person indeed, Like somebody said, I thought we were all Grimsby Town supporters on this site and everybody has got a different point of view, that is very healthy indeed but express your views without being personal.

Just a couple of years ago I went on the Football pitch to try and get the crowd behind the players, to my mind the club needed lifting at that time, it did not bother me at all, just trying to help the spirit at the club. I think the world of this club, have got some great memories, and have met some very famous people through my connection to the Mariners, e.g. Geoff Hurst, Jack Charlton, Bobby Charlton, Denis Law, George Best, Nobby Stiles who is a great friend of mine from the same area of Manchester that I come from.

All have been to Grimsby for the charity that I am involved in, and we have been delighted to have raised a lot of money at these events for local deserving causes. Maybe I should just ignore this guy but who does he think he his, in my eyes he his not a Grimsby Town Supporter, just a trouble causer, I would have loved to have played against him out on a football pitch.

Dave Boylen.
