Planners Recommend Club Relocation

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 17/01/2007

NORTH East Lincolnshire planners have recommended that the council's Planning Committee approve the application by Grimsby Town football Club to move its stadium to Great Coates.

The recommendations will be considered at a special Planning Committee meeting at 6.30pm on Thursday, January 25 at Grimsby Town Hall.

In a detailed report, the committee are reminded that the site is allocated for this purpose in the current Local Plan, and complies with the current and proposed Regional Spatial Strategy. Although the proposals are still to be proved financially, suggested planning conditions will prevent any development proceeding without the certainty of funding being available to complete the stadium.

Other points in the proposed development include a Park and Ride site, off-site car parking controls on match days, shuttle buses and upgrading the Great Coates level crossing. There will be new pedestrian and cycle accesses to the site. The stadium will be cross subsidised by retail development.

If the Committee decides to approve the recommendations it will be referred to Government Office (Yorkshire and the Humber), who will decide whether or not to call it in for a public inquiry. When the matter was last considered they decided not to intervene.Ends

(Grimsby Town applied for permission in February 2006 for the site adjacent to the A180 and Great Coates, and this follows on from a previous attempt in 2001/03 which was eventually refused as no agreement could be reached with the landowner.

The application is in outline, with most matters like design reserved for further applications. The proposals include initially a 12,000 seater stadium with a second phase of 20,100 seats with eventually 1,300 car park spaces.

There will be a Park and Ride with 700 spaces and a retail development of 13,935 sq metres. It will present the opportunity to have a landmark building at a key gateway into Grimsby matching others in the region such as the KC stadium in Hull and the Keepmoat in Doncaster.)
