GRIMSBY Town lined up on this sunny afternoon against Bury, who like Town are in the wrong half of the table, for this must win-match for the Mariners. There was a recall for long serving right back John McDermott at the expense of Matt Bloomer.

The Mariners kicked off against Bury, who in the early stages did not look like a team who haven't won for 12 matches and have not scored a goal in the last four games.

The opening minutes were very tight and the game was restricted to the midfield area with both teams seemingly cancelling each other out causing the home fans to become frustrated. Town continued to try and break Bury down and took an early lead with a bizarre goal. Danny North picked the ball up on the left and cut to just inside the area. His low cross into the box eluded everyone and somehow found it’s way into the bottom of the corner with North the most surprised of all!

This gave Town extra confidence and they began to dominate and control the first 45 mins. Shortly afterwards the Mariners took a 2 goal lead with a well taken goal. The ball was crossed from the right and Toner, from just inside the area, continued his rich scoring form by placing a half volley in the top corner.

For the rest of the first half Town continued to push for the third goal which would have surely killed off the game. Despite several good chances - including a North half volley which he blazed over when he should have at least hit the target - Town could not find the killer third goal.

At the start of the second half Town began as though the job was already done and the game was won. Grimsby played very deep and seemed to soak up the expected Bury pressure and looked to play the counter attack wherever possible on the break.

However with all the pressure from Bury the defence held firm and never looked in trouble. Only once in the second half did Bury break through, but Barnes was able to block and the trouble was cleared.

In a fairly poor second half there was really nothing much of note which happened. Town had a couple of half chances to get the third goal, but they really seemed intent on just keeping what they had.

Town did replace Hunt with Boshell, Rankin for North and lastly Bore with Till in a bid to try and create the third goal to make the game safe, but just as the first half the third goal did not seem likely and Town held out for three more vital points.

MOM: Toner, scored a great goal and was a constant threat down the left wing.
