Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby be next season?

Can Anyone Read the Future?

THE season is getting closer and around the Town faithful is a mixed feeling of what will be achieved in the 2007/08 football season.

For some promotion is the only option, where other supporters feel the team lacks strength to challenge to for promotion out of the basement division!

So far Town have signed Clarke from Boston on a free, a player who is classed as a utility player and is comfortable along the back four or in midfield, it seems that he will fill in the boots of 'Sir Macca'.

'Keeper Gary Montgomery has also arrived on a free from Rotherham United. At 24 years of age he started his career at Coventry City playing against both Arsenal and Chelsea; he had a forgettable season last season and looks to challenge Barnes for the number one shirt at his new home.

Buckley has looked to reinstate stability, resigning Bolland, Jones and Whittle. These three will certainly give the team a sense of experience and professionalism. Add James Hunt and Town certainly have some crunching tacklers and determined warriors.

Now let's add youth to the equation, starting with Bennett a young centre half who looks calm and composed in his few senior outings. Next up is North who grew in stature, strength and always showed the willingness to move for the ball, the desire to unsettle defenders and he clearly enjoyed putting the ball in the back of the net on several occasions. Peter Bore had a tremendous start last season, but Buckley hinted at attitude problems and seems happy to protect the young lad from an ego-accelerating profession. He showed he can run, head, pass and score so there is no reason why he can't fight for a place. Then there is Andy Taylor, both Buckley and Watkiss have commented on his scoring ability, and in limited opportunities he scored two for the first team and many for a young reserve team.

Improved players last term included Newey, at one stage he was receiving jeers right left and centre, but after Christmas he knuckled down, sorted his positioning out and worked well with Toner down the left wing, looking to make surging runs to help the winger in attack. Toner was not fancied in the middle, so with lack of options he was moved to the left wing, where he made the berth his own, wading in with goals for the cause as well as defending well with Newey. Buckley has spoke of his delight how he settled into the position and admitted he never fancied Toner as a central midfielder.

Phil Barnes gained much unwanted attentions for his performances. One week he would show great ability, the next he would gift a team with a soft goal. After Christmas he seemed to improve and looked more assured between the sticks

So far it seems Town have a good blend of characters to make a push for promotion. A few players will be required and no doubt Buckley and Watkiss will be working hard to secure the players they want. Town seem to have a mixture of battlers, pure footballers, youth and maturity. The team is a settled one which is good to see instead of having 15 new faces in 30 days.

Come next May we shall find out who was right and who was wrong, some supporters will love gloating but one thing is for sure every GTFC fan wants success no matter what their thoughts and opinions are about the club!
