Town Win Away

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 02/09/2012

GRIMSBY followed up the first win of the season against Mansfield last weekend with another impressive performance. Town came away from Hereford with all three points against one of the early pace setters for promotion.

Dale Southwell scored his first goal of the season on 40 minutes to put Town 1-0 up after a terrific run and cross by Thomas down the left.

Southwell started the game as a sub but came on for Greg Pearson after just 28 minutes.

Four minutes later Town went 2-0 up from a corner. Pearson rose and headed the ball onto the post, then scored from the rebound.

After a fairly dull third quarter to the game suddenly the match came to life.

Town should have gone 3-0 up midway through the second half when Cook headed wide a golden opportunity, once again set up by a brilliant left side cross from Thomas.

Shortly afterwards Thomas saved Town at the other end with a superb last ditch challenge after a defensive mix-up.

Its was Southwell's turn then to miss a simple chance when he placed the ball wide of an open target when the 'keeper was caught off his line.

Town comfortably held on to record their first away win of the season, and enter the top 10 of the BSP. They picked up another clean sheet in the process as well.

The Mariners head to Barrow on Tuesday night before they entertain big spenders Forest Green on Saturday.
