GRIMSBY have pulled off a coup in appointing Ian Holloway as their new manager. The 56-year-old made his name in management at Bristol Rovers and Blackpool and has endeared himself to television viewers over a number of years as a manager, personality and TV pundit.

Holloway has been out of football for over a year since leaving QPR May 2018, and has since worked an a TV pundit and after-dinner speaker. He is to relocate to the Grimsby area and has also bought shares in the club as a statement of his commitment to the new role.

Grimsby have largely appointed untested managers in recent years and only Leonie Lawrence approaches the stature of Holloway in terms of their experience and reputation within the game. Lawrence though was appointed in 2000 when the club were in the Championship and to attract a candidate of the magnitude of Holloway from a lowly position in League Two is a considerable achievement.

Holloway will soon get the chance to see his new players as they face Sal ford at Blundell Park on New Year's Day. Anthony Limbrick will continue in his role as Assistant Manager, and it is likely he will pick the team for the final time against Salford.

After a fairly miserable decade for the Mariners, a more timely appointment could not be forthcoming to usher in a new decade which will hopefully see the club relocate and a change of ownership take place.
