Handy Comeback

News From 19th March 2000

Grimsby Town centre back Peter Handyside made his comeback in a midweek outing for the reserves at Port Vale, which saw the Town second string lose 3-0.

The bad news is that he still requires a futher a operation before full recovery can be possible. Despite building up his fitness to the extent that is able to play for the reserves at Port Vale , Handyside played with pins and a plate still in his ankle. Though he could play on without surgery, it will only be after the operation that he can look forward to complete recuperation.

At some stage he has to have them out and go back into plaster. Allaying fears he may never play again, the former Scotland Under-21 international has been in full training for the last month.

"I've been back training with the lads for a few weeks.
"But I was off with flu last week and that has set me back a bit fitness wise.
"There are no real goals but it's just nice to get back and train with the lads again - even that's a bonus. I've just got to keep going.
"I'm in full training and I'm doing full contact and eveything and it's just a case of building up the strength.
"The main thing is making sure there are no setbacks with the ankle, and the legs and the fitness will come back naturally. As for the injury itself, it's completely healed."
