Black Signs Up

News From 12th July 2000

Kingsley Black

In a surprise development at Blundell Park, out-of-contract winger Kingsley Black has signed up for a one year deal after talks with Grimsby manager Alan Buckley.

Back in May Black had been told by Buckley to explore his options elsewhere, and looked to be a certainty to make a summer exit from Blundell Park

Although at the time Buckley did not rule out the possibility of retaining the 31-year old wide man, the writing appeared to be on the wall, especially when Black received a lucrative offer to play for Schiandung, the third biggest club in the emerging Chinese league.

The former Luton and Nottingham Forest player, who arrived at Blundell Park in the Brian Laws era for £25K, operated last season mainly as a squad player, making 15 appearances and netting twice. An experienced player and one of the better-known names on Town's books, Black's signature gives a small but significant boost to Alan Buckley's attacking options next season.

Black explained that the reason he stayed with Town is the chance of first team football.

"I had some phone calls but I must admit to preferring to come back here. I want to get in the side and play as many games possible and I want the team to be as successful as possible."
