Matthews Contract Talks

By: The Fishy News Team
Date: 09/03/2001

GRIMSBY TOWN manager Lennie Lawrence is hoping to sign Leeds United striker Lee Matthews on a free transfer next week. Although Matthews' week long trial at the club ended today, Lawrence has told the 22 year old front man to stay at the club on Monday and Tuesday next week to discuss terms.

"We'd like to sign him" the Grimsby boss told Radio Humberside. "He's got a good turn of pace for a big lad. He's a bit unfit as he hasn't played many games recently, but we'll get him there" said Lawrence, adding "He could be a good long term investment for the club".

22 year old Matthews, who played in the same Leeds youth side as Harry Kewell, Steve McPhail, Jonathon Woodgate and Paul Robinson, and was rated at the time as amongst one of the best young prospects at Yorkshire club, has missed out on the success since enjoyed by his contemporaries through injuries (including two broken legs) and a drop in form.

A move to Blundell Park might suit both parties, with the Mariners desperately seeking a striker before the March 22nd transfer deadline, and would also come at the right time to kick-start the Middlesbrough-born forward's football career.
