Villa Move on Coyne

By: Peter Forrester
Date: 15/03/2001

As expected due to his outstanding performances over the last two seasons, Danny Coyne has attracted the attention of premier league clubs. Bolton Wanderers and Aston Villa are the first two clubs to denote an interest with Bolton sending their scouts to see him in action over the last two games.

Aston Villa boss John Gregory has had Coyne watched several times already this season but took the opportunity to visit Blundell Park to take a look at Coyne first hand and was at the Tuesday night game to see the Mariners' 1-1 draw with Wimbledon.

According to a report in the Grimsby Telegraph Gregory is planning to sign Coyne in the summer and will use him as the understudy to the Villa and England goalie David James which will allow Gregory to let his number two keeper Peter Enckelman go out on loan to gain more experience.

Grimsby will not be letting Coyne go cheaply but Mariners boss Lennie Lawrence would find it very hard to refuse a good offer if he is looking for cash to sign new players.

Coyne is also reported to be on David Platt's prospect list at Nottingham Forest but Bolton are still favourites to make the first move as they have a goalkeeping problem with a number of loan requests not reaching fruition and with the transfer deadline only two weeks away this, plus the knowledge that Villa are on the move, may prompt Bolton to step in quickly.

"I can only tell you that there has been no official approach from Aston Villa or anyone else for Danny Coyne, but if there is interest from bigger clubs out there, it is hardly surprising given the form he has been in this season." commented Grimsby manager Lennie Lawrence. "As far as I'm concerned though, Danny won't be going anywhere before deadline day."
