Macca Signs New Contract

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 09/04/2001

JOHN McDERMOTT today put pen to paper on a new two year contract that will keep the Mariners first choice right back for most of the last 16 years at Blundell Park until 2003. The 32 year old defender, who this season broke the appearance record for Grimsby, is the second player to sign a new deal.

The Middlesborough born full back equalled Keith Jobling's tally of 450 league appearances away at Sheffield United earlier this season, and then surpassed the record in the following fixture against Wolves at Molineux. Since then McDermott has clocked up 467 league appearances in a career spent entirely at Blundell Park.

Before signing the new deal McDermott told Mariners net: "I have made it quite clear that I want to stay.

"I am happy to be here. I know I have been here a long time now and a few people, even a few managers in the past have had little digs saying 'Why didn't you move on, is it a lack of ambition?'.

"But this place is always exciting, you are either involved in promotions or in a relegation battle." This season is no exception with the the Mariners currently perched just above the relegation zone with six remaining fixtures to play, four of which are at home.

McDermott will be the second senior player to sign up for a new deal, joining teammate Steve Livingstone, who put pen to paper in February.

The remaining list of players out of contract at the end of the season is

  • Kingsley Black
  • Matthew Bloomer.
  • Wayne Burnett
  • Danny Butterfield
  • Daryl Clare
  • Stacy Coldicott
  • Kevin Donovan
  • Tony Gallimore
  • Peter Handyside
  • Andy Smith
  • Richard Smith
  • Paul Groves
