Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby be next season?

Jevons Bought "On Tick"

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 06/07/2001

THE JEVONS DEAL will cost Grimsby a maximum of £250,000, of which £150,000 is the basic transfer fee, with the remainder being appearance-based. The transaction with Everton has been structured with phased payments starting in September when the Mariners receive their TV revenue.

Grimsby manager Lennie Lawrence was delighted with the new addition to his squad and expressed his appreciation towards the Board of Directors for providing the financial means to support his plans to strengthen the team.

"...Obviously we have had to be responsible with the club's finances..."

The Town boss told Mariners Net: "The Board have given me tremendous support in difficult circumstances, both with Stuart Campbell and now Phil Jevons. Both are young players who are valuable assets to this club. It shows we mean business.

"Obviously we have had to be responsible with the club's finances and that is why the deal has been structured in this way with phase payments over a long period of time."

The nature of the payment details reveals the extent to which the Mariners are existing "on tick". Much of this year's TV money was gambled last season in trying to stay in the First Division, and now players are being bought with future funds due to the club. The Jevons transfer highlights the precarious existence led by Grimsby Town, who are currently losing over £20,000 a week, just to make ends meet.
