Lawrence Facing Selection 'Headache'

By: Fishy News Team
Date: 02/08/2001

LENNIE LAWRENCE is delighted to have the right kind of selection dilemma facing him in some areas of the pitch, with many of his players fighting for a place in the Grimsby starting XI against Crewe on Saturday week, giving Lawrence a problem just keeping all of his squad happy.

"I'm scratching my head now. One or two are making it difficult" the Grimsby boss told Radio Humberside. "There are four, five, six maybe definite and one or two staking a claim big time.

"I've got four for two in midfield, Mike Jeffrey's just played his best game since I've been here [against Scunthorpe], and I can't really leave out Danny [Butterfield]".

"There are less bodies around than last year but more competition, if you know what I mean" said a excited Lawrence. The Town boss, who begins his first full season in charge of the Mariners, has spent much of the summer keeping nearly all of the nucleus of the side together - albeit minus centre back Peter Handyside - and he is now beginning to see the fruits of his labour with competition in most areas of the pitch, as well as a 100% committed group of individuals.

New faces brought in include strikers Phil Jevons and Chris Thompson, and ex-Leicester midfielder Stuart Campbell, the latter who has joined Grimsby permanently after an extended loan spell from Filbert Street last season, as well as a large contingent of reserve players.

The Town boss hinted earlier this week that the team selected to start against Huddersfield in Friday night's friendly at Blundell Park would be the same one as took the pitch against Crewe in the season's curtain raiser on Saturday week.
