Tommy Widdrington1996/97-1998/9985 (21)8 goals

Tommy Widdrington I always said that if you were bought as a replacement for Paul Groves, you were up against it. Unfortunately for Tommy, he was no Paul Groves, although he was not a bad player by any means, but never fully justified his £300,000 price tag. Actually, for someone who was signed by Laws, he lasted quite a while, 3 whole seasons in fact.

One of these was taken up by injuries, but still Widdrington provided value for money with his regular fights, eye-balling and crunching tackles (when he could be bothered). Although, I never personally favoured him due to one particular incident in the 96/97 season at home to Reading.

There I was in my normal place at the top of the main stand, when suddenly, Widdrington hoofed the ball out for a throw. The ball went all the way up the main stand (which it never does) and nearly took my head off! If I had not moved my head out the way, I would seriously not be here to tell the story! In fact, the mark of where the ball hit the press box could be seen up to a year ago! So, for this reason only, Tommy was never really my favourite person.

Next Player: Jason Pearcey
