Who will win League 2?

Grimsby Take 3 Points in Blundell Park Thriller

By: Fishy News Team
Date: 12/08/2001

A SECOND HALF goal by substitute Wayne Burnett was enough to secure a deserved win for the Mariners - seventeen years since Grimsby last won at Blundell Park in the season's opening game.

Burnett's goal came from a simple tap-in from a Rowan cross after good work by the Grimsby striker, who started up front alongside Phil Jevons, following an earlier chance which had been parried away by the Crewe 'keeper.

The Mariners were indebted to goalkeeper Danny Coyne who made two world class saves in the closing moments of the game, although Crewe did not really deserve to get anything out of a game dominated by Grimsby.

Earlier Jevons and Campbell had come close for the Mariners to add to their 1-0 lead, and young Jonathan Rowan hit the post in the first half with the Crewe 'keeper well beaten.

Grimsby: (4-4-2) Coyne - McDermott, Groves, Beherall, Gallimore (Burnett 38) - Campbell, Butterfield, Willems, Pouton - Jevons, Rowan (Jeffrey 65)

Subs not used: Croudson, Coldicott, Allen

Crewe: Bankole, Foster, Smith S, Walton, Charnock (Little 71), Lunt, Sorvel (Brammer 75), Navarro, Grant, Tait (Richards 82), Jack

Subs not used: Ince, Sodje

Attendance: 5,368

Referee: Trevor Parkes (Birmingham)
