Two Irons in the Fire

By: Jostein Jensen
Date: 26/08/2001

LENNIE LAWRENCE is rumoured to be interested in bringing two Scunthorpe United players to Blundell Park. Reports in Sunday newspapers are linking Town with Scunthorpe winger Gareth Sheldon. The Scunthorpe web site iron-bru.net also claims that the Mariners have their eyes on another Iron player.

Lawrence has been linked with or brought on trial various other wingers both earlier this season and during the summer including Moore, Boulding and Ellison. 21-year-old Sheldon is an attacking right-sided midfielder, who has also played in spells as a forward during his career.

Alex Calvo Garcia The second player is believed to be Spanish playmaker Calvo Garcia (left), whose place in the United first team has been increasingly taken by Matt Sparrow in recent months. 29-year-old Calvo Garcia was brought to Scunthorpe originally as a striker in '96 by the then Iron manager Mick Buxton, but has been deployed mainly in a forward role by United's current boss Brian Laws.

Although last weekend the Grimsby Town chairman Peter Furneaux stated that no money would be made available for new players, the possibility of a player exchange deal involving Grimsby 'keeper Steve Croudson, currently at loan at Glanford Park, may be a route which Lennie Lawrence could take to overcome the financial constraints he is forced to operate under.
