My Black And White Hero: Matt Tees et. al.

By: Neil Holmes

WELL, where do you start with GTFC heroes. I've got dozens - for lot's of different reasons. I only go back 1963 for my "debut" as a supporter so I can't comment on some of the great names - Tweedie et al - from before then that I've heard so much about.

For me, 3 stand out:

  • Matt Tees - what an amazing character. Thin bow legs but brave and one of the best headers of the ball (remembering the balls they played with in his day - laces and all). Not just as a player but the motivating effect he had, particularly on the fans.

  • Bobby Cumming. I'm sorry but this lad was priceless. He would go through several brick walls for the team - even when he didn't have to! I listen to the occasional ooh's and aah's today from current supporters when Alan Pouton launches himself into tackles and just wish the younger supporters like my own son could have seen Bobby play. He'd start a tackle on a Tuesday ready for Saturday's game. Who will ever forget the incident when Norman Hunter got sent off for Barnsley when he's just simply had enough of Bobby and turned round and lumped him and walked straight off, not waiting for the ref to bother.....

  • Mark Lever. An under rated player but, again, one that the supporters all knew was totally genuine. Knew his own limits and when to find row Z with the ball. Totally genuine - messed about by a certain Town manager and was allowed ridiculously to leave when he didn't want - or need to. Most supporters would gladly have him in today's team. In no way an outstanding player but an absolutely terrific team man.

    Soooo many others..........
