Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

Groves To Move For Boston Striker?

By: Gary Spate
Date: 10/01/2002

GRIMSBY TOWN's new player-manager Paul Groves may be set to make a bid for the young starlet Anthony Elding. Groves told the Grimsby Telegraph this week that he is looking for a striker and rumours have been circulating saying Elding could fit the bill.

The young striker is currently on trial with the Premiership outfit Tottenham Hotspur and manager Glenn Hoddle is said to be impressed with his performance in a training match where he bagged a couple of goals.

It is believed that Grimsby boss Paul Groves has been given up to £100,000 to secure the signatures of a couple of players to avoid relegation after finding themselves in the dreaded drop zone. So far this season the Mariners have been struggling to find the back of the net so Elding, who has scored 4 in his last 4 games (not including the abandoned Nuneaton game), could fill the void.

So far there has been no official word from Grimsby or Boston but it is believed that a move will be made by Groves on Thursday when Elding returns home from his trial spell in London.

Earlier this season former Mariners striker Daryl Clare had been subject to speculation that he could be returning to Grimsby but their former manager Lennie Lawrence dismissed the rumour.

Should new manager Paul Groves be unable to sign young Elding, Daryl may yet be given a second chance in Division One.
