Where will Grimsby finish?

Coyne And Jevons Transfer-Listed!

By: Richard Lord
Date: 11/07/2002

GRIMSBY Town's preparations for the new season took another blow late last night when manager Paul Groves declared that both keeper Danny Coyne and striker Phil Jevons have been placed on the transfer list.

Emerging from a two-hour board meeting with chairman Peter Furneaux and other board representatives, Groves revealed to Mariners Net, the official GTFC website, that the decision was based purely on financial considerations and not footballing reasons.

"I am bitterly disappointed and it must be made clear that this is not a decision based on football. It is about money," he told Mariners Net. "I spoke to both Danny and Phil last night and got the players together this morning to tell them the news. The lads are gutted but the whole thing is dictated by finance."

Town's resources are already stretched to the limit, with only 14 full-time professionals currently on their books. After Michael Boulding signed for Villa earlier in the week, and Ford's uncertain future at Blundell Park, this will be a bitter pill to swallow for Mariners fans.

Coyne has received the Player of the Year award for the last two seasons running, and Jevons only signed for Town last summer for £250,000. Now the Mariners have to face up to the possibility of selling the duo before the new season gets underway.

It would also leave the club with a goalkeeper crisis, as it would leave only Bradley Hughes as the only fit keeper for the start of the season, if Coyne does leave.

The transfer-listing of the popular and highly rated Welsh keeper will no doubt grab the attention of many managers across the football league, including former Town boss Lennie Lawrence.
