Reprieved Reserves Get Underway

By: Martin Copass
Date: 21/08/2002

TOWN’S reprieved reserve team play their first game of the season on Wednesday when they visit near neighbours Scunthorpe United.

It would have made Paul Groves' job even more difficult than ever if he had been made to go through this season without a decent level of football for the players who weren't playing in the first team and there would also have been little opportunity for the younger players to stake their claim for first team duty.

The reserve league has now been regionalised, with the league mainly made up of teams from Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire. Hartlepool and Darlington make up the numbers. These teams don't exactly inspire the thought of quality football, but it is far better than the alternative that would have been on offer.

With the first team squad being so small this season, there is quite likely to be plenty of opportunity for the younger players to show if they are capable of making the step up to the first team, although we are also likely to see another procession of trialists as we did towards the end of last season

One or two of last years reserves squad were showing signs of making the grade, and I am sure I will reporting on even more progress form them this season. The one I would pick out to make the grade is striker Darren Mansaram, but there are sure to be others out to prove there worth with the first team squad being so small.

The first home game is Wednesday 28th August at 2pm against new team Boston United, and it’s free to get in, so if you get the chance, get yourselves down to Blundell Park and support the future players of Grimsby Town. A good start to the season could even see Town challenging for promotion to a higher league, something they just missed out on at the end of last season.
