Groves Chasing US League Player?

By: Paul Holmes
Date: 25/09/2002

PAUL Groves is believed to be chasing Milwaukee Rampage defender Destin Makumbu. Makumbu plays in the US A-League (second tier division) and has attracted interest from the MLS as well as Germany.

Born in Zaire, but raised in London, Makumbu was once on the books of Tottenham as a youth before opting to move across the Atlantic with the Rampage. His time with the Milwaukee club has earned him many plaudits and attracted many scouts. However his spell has been tainted by a poor disciplinary record.

At just 20, it is a trait that could be ironed out though.

Should Groves move to sign the youngster he would face opposition from several German sides. Rampage are an affilite of MLS side Chicago Fire, if they decided to draft Makumbu into their side then the players value would soar and no doubt place him out of the range of Groves.

Makumbu has stated that he would like to stay in the US but is also keen to move back to Europe. "I would love to play in MLS for a season, and I would love to go back to Europe and play somewhere at a high level."
