Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

Groves: Let's Go Down Fighting!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 07/10/2002

"THE game was won for them in the first half and when you concede goals like that it makes it very difficult. We had to chase the game after that." Paul Groves said in his post-match comments.

"But I won't point the finger at any individual. It's a team game and they all have to take responsibility for it. I won't blame the strikers because there weren't too many opportunities. They haven't scored, but when did they get the chances to?"

"Their goals were direct and very disappointing. But I don't want to criticise players publicly. I've had a go at them in the dressing room and that's where it stays."

Groves admitted that the pressure is growing on him as his side continues to wallow in the relegation zone: "It's a result-orientated sport and if you don't get the results the pressure comes."

Geoff Ford, sports editor of the Grimsby Telegraph, in his after match comments said:

As surrenders go, this one was pretty abject.

Grimsby Town tamely gifted Reading all three points with a first half horror show which will go down as one of the poorest many fans can remember.

The manager, watching from the stands and then the dugout, cannot have liked what he saw. The fans hated it. They were entitled to a lot more.

So, a second successive 3-0 home defeat, confirming what we have known for a while. That Town will need a miracle to stay up. But if they do make the drop, the fans would at least like to see them go down fighting.
